Edited by: Loan Tran, Fall 2012

Introduction

Percival Lowell was an American astronomer who predicted the existence of a planet beyond Neptune and formed the beginning of the effort that led to the discovery of Pluto. In fact, the choice of the name of Pluto and element symbol, PL, were influenced by his initials. However, he may be best remembered as a major supporter that there were canals on Mars used for the purpose of irrigation. He also had other endeavors such as a businessman, author, and mathematician. The Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, was founded and named after him.
